Physical Activity Advisor – Salisbury
Shaun is the Physical Activity Advisor at the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre in Salisbury working alongside physiotherapists to introduce and encourage newly injured and previous patients to take part in different activities and sports.
Shaun has been a paraplegic since a road accident in 1976, aged 17 after which he spent 12 months at NSIC at Stoke Mandeville. After being in involved in motorsport and achieving his racing licence Shaun was looking for something to satisfy his competitive nature and was advised that a local table tennis club had started up in a local village hall. He went along and it wasn’t long before he ‘got the bug’ and started playing in his local non-disabled leagues and then onto wheelchair class competitions. He began playing in numerous National events and before being selected for Great Britain. Shaun played in ten international events, winning seven medals and also became interested in coaching, gaining a UKCC Level 2 Coaching Certificate.
Shaun’s coaching experience includes selection for England’s Elite Athletes with a Disability at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010, the INAS (Elite Learning Disability) World Table Tennis Championships in Hong Kong in 2014 and the IWAS National Junior Games at Stoke Mandeville in 2013. At the IWAS games he took four young wheelchair players to the event and together they came away with Gold, Silver and Bronze in the Singles and Gold and Bronze in the Team event!
Shaun worked as the Regional Disability Officer for Table Tennis England between 2011 and 2013 in the South & South East region, establishing regular disability training sessions, and talent ID days. He is currently the Chair of our Selection panel at British Para Table Tennis whose programme’s contributed seven medals to the impressive GB medal tally at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Paralympics.
Shaun has volunteered at the Salisbury SIU for over 20 years and has run the table tennis competition at the WheelPower Inter Spinal Unit Games on numerous occasions.
