Date: Friday 21 June
On Friday 21 June a group of local disabled people joined WheelPower for a day of handcycling at Evesham Velo Park. The event was the first of its kind to be hosted at the park and it provided a fantastic opportunity for all who attended to try the sport, and feel the wind in their hair as they cycled around the track.
WheelPower, the national charity for wheelchair sport delivered this FREE event with the support of the coaches from the Handcycling Association UK. They brought along a wide selection of bikes, suitable for people of various physical disabilities. As well as the traditional hand cycles the charity also brought a couple of brand new power assisted bikes which were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.
"Over the course of the day we welcomed seven cyclists who all really enjoyed their time trying out the different bikes at this brilliant cycling facility. At 2.30pm we still had four going around the track! They were enjoying it so much but we had to tell them to finish up their last lap before we travelled back to Buckinghamshire. We believe one of the riders actually completed 30 miles today, which is just amazing!" (Dave Cook, coach HCAUK)
"It was so nice to meet you everyone today, thank you so much. Iwan has had a great day and will be looking into getting his own bike soon! Not only did he get handcycling coaching but we also serviced his unloved day chair too!" (Steve, Dad of Iwan)
Conor Harris, Sports Events and Development Officer at WheelPower said, “We had a great time in Evesham at our first Learn to Handcycle event of the year. Everyone who took part in the day really enjoyed the opportunity to try the different bikes on offer and we hope the event has inspired them to do more handcycling in the future. The Velo Park here in Evesham was a brilliant venue for our event and we thank the team for supporting us to provide such a fun, safe and welcoming event. We now look forward to more Learn to Handcycle events in Kent and Manchester later this year, and hope to return to Evesham again in the future.”
