This year we have broken these sessions down into smaller 2 hour slots. You can choose either an AM or PM slot. Once you have signed up we will contact you to arrange what’s best for you.
This event is supported by the coaches from the Handcycling Association UK who will be on hand to help you to have the best experience possible. These are relaxed events where you can do as much as you want, it’s about having a go in a fun and safe environment.
We now have 5 had cycles with 250W power assist. These we have found are game changers for anyone who has poor arm strength or grip. The power assist, combined with active hands means that someone with a complete high level Cervical SCI injury or upper limb loss can experience the thrill and freedom of cycling again.
Worried about getting in and out of a recumbent hand bike? No need – we have this covered. We have a really cool height adjustable lifting stool to make light work of the chair to floor transfer. Simply wind the stool to the same height as your wheelchair, slide across then wind the stool down to the height of the hand bike. This means you only ever have to complete a side shuffle on and off the hand cycle. Lifting height adjustable lifting stool is available for everyone to use
Stoke Mandeville Stadium is the home of disability sport and has accessible parking, toilet and changing facilities. Participants are advised to wear warm comfortable clothing.
The next Learn to Handcycle event will take place the day before WheelPower’s Tour de Vale Charity Bike. The ride has been taking place annually in Buckinghamshire since 2003 and starts & finishes at Stoke Mandeville Stadium. The Tour de Vale regularly attracts hand cyclists to the routes (25,75 and 110km) and if you were interested in taking on the challenge we would love you to get in touch with us via sport@wheelpower.org.uk.

Frequently Asked Questions
Your hand bikes look very low to the ground – how do I get in and out?
We have a height adjustable lifting stool that’s custom made for the job. All you need to do is complete a sideways slide transfer.
I have not cycled for a long time, I’m worried about my fitness.
You can do as little or as much as you want on these days. We also have power assisted hand cycles which are a lot of fun and require much less effort.
I have poor grip, can I hand cycle?
Without you wanting to give it a try, we can’t say for sure. With our lifting stool for easy slide shuffle transfers, active hands combined with our power assisted hand cycles to give you the very best chance of experiencing the thrill and freedom of cycling.
I have upper limb loss, can I hand cycle?
Without you wanting to give it a try, we can’t say for sure. However our power assisted hand cycles mean you need much less grip and strength to have fun. We carry plenty of strapping to help strap prosthetics to the cranks. We have a hand cycle with a ‘back pedal brake’ to assist those without the ability to pull a brake lever.
I don’t want to be that low to the ground
Not all of our bikes are fully recumbent. We have a wide range of bikes. We will be able to fund the right bike to make you feel comfortable.
Why are recumbent hand cycles so low to the ground?
It’s physics and engineering. By loading the bike more evenly with your weight (by laying down further) enables the bike to better deal with gradients and loose surfaces – making covering longer distances over all kinds of ground possible.
Can I come for just part of the day?
Yes – arrive and leave when you want
Is there parking and changing rooms?
Stoke Mandeville is a fully inclusive venue with ample parking, accessible toilets and changing rooms.
