Alfie Hewitt wins silver medal at Rio 2016 Paralympic Games

Alife is a 26-year-old wheelchair Tennis player and is the current World No. 1 in both singles and doubles.

Alfie was born with a congenital heart defect, Tetralogy of Fallot, and underwent open heart surgery at just 6 months old. He was then diagnosed with Perthes Disease at the age of six.

Alfie began playing tennis in 2005 after attending a tennis camp, and was selected to represent Great Britain at the ITF’s European Junior Wheelchair Tennis camp just months after playing his first tournament.

Alife was first introduced to WheelPower at the 2009 National Junior Games where he was given the opportunity to try his hand at lots of different sports. During this week he helped his basketball team to win first prize, and get 2nd in the table tennis, which reignited his love for sport and winning. Following on from this he went from strength to strength in wheelchair tennis and in 2013 was the recipient of a new chair thanks to WheelPower’s Wheel Appeal.

Alife has gone on to win 9 grand slam singles titles, and has 21 grand slam doubles titles with Gordan Reid. He’s also managed 3 silver Paralympic medals, with the hopes to collect more at this summer’s games.

Alife was awarded an OBE in 2023 for his services to Tennis, and continues to be an inspiration to many young players across the world.
