Wheelchair Bowls

Wheelchair Bowls is a great game for all ages, no matter your level of ability …

Bowls is recognised as one of the most accessible and integrated sports, and it can be played by almost anyone, with or without a disability. You can play in many formats, singles, pairs, triples and fours, and you can enjoy a game alongside other people with a disability and also non-disabled players at clubs across the country.

Bowls is a real social game where people play to whatever standard they wish, whether it be a friendly fun game amongst friends, to competitions at club, county, or even national level, with the ultimate being representing your country at the Commonwealth Games.

What do you need to get started?

To participate in inclusive bowls activities it may be necessary for individuals or clubs to purchase adaptive equipment.

In recent years the game has become far more accessible to disabled people with the introduction of more accessible and electric wheelchairs. The equipment is constantly evolving and there are now a number of wheelchairs on the market some manual and some electric, that all have larger wheels so as not to damage the bowling surface and are designed to be stable and safe. Many clubs have a wheelchair you can borrow.

As well as the accessible chairs there are various other bowling aids to help people play like bowling arms, bowling buddies. A full list of equipment items that are available can be found on the Disability Bowls England website.

Disability Bowls England is a national sports charity working to promote and encourage more disabled people to play bowls. They host a number of friendly matches both on Indoor and Outdoor greens, where members play together against host clubs. There are also nationwide competitions for both Classified and Unclassified players which are open to any member who wants to take part.

Disability Bowls England also regularly holds taster sessions throughout the year in different parts of the country.

DBE is very pleased to announce after the success of our previous seven taster days around England, that we have received extra support from Sport England and WheelPower through the ‘Together Fund’.
