Charitable objects

We are governed by our Articles of Association and our charitable objects are to provide, promote and develop opportunities for disabled people to participate in recreational and competitive wheelchair sport to lead healthy, active lives by:

  • increasing participation
  • raising awareness of WheelPower and wheelchair sport
  • providing iconic and inclusive facilities at Stoke Mandeville Stadium
  • using the heritage of Stoke Mandeville and the power of the Paralympic Games to inspire

WheelPower is committed to ensuring our work complies with the principles of good governance set out in Sport England’s A Code for Sports Governance.

We believe in having strong governance as it assists us to achieve our ambitious vision to transform lives through sport.

Governance Principles

WheelPower aims to have a clear and appropriate governance structure, led by a Board which is collectively responsible for the long-term success of the organisation and exclusively vested with the power to lead it. The Board shall be properly constituted, and shall operate effectively.

WheelPower shall recruit and engage people with appropriate diversity, independence, skills, experience and knowledge to take effective decisions that further the organisation’s goals.

WheelPower shall be transparent and accountable, engaging effectively with stakeholders and nurturing internal democracy.

WheelPower shall uphold high standards of integrity, and engage in regular and effective evaluation to drive continuous improvement.

WheelPower shall comply with all applicable laws and regulations, undertake responsible financial strategic planning, and have appropriate controls and risk management procedures.

Governance Action Plan

To support this process and help with our continuous improvement, we have a number of plans, policies and terms of reference which are part of our Governance Action Plan which is monitored regularly by the Board and updated as required to comply with the Code and legislation.

Audited accounts

The latest set of audited accounts, including Trustees Annual Report, was prepared by accountants Haines Watts to cover the accounting period April 2021 to March 2022.

Trustees

The Fundraising Regulator received no complaints regarding WheelPower’s fundraising activities during the last twelve months.
